Descripción
Póvoa de Varzim is a city and municipality in the Porto district, situated on the Atlantic coast north of Vila do Conde. It is primarily known as a fishing port and beach resort, with a long sandy beach and a traditional fishing quarter whose houses are decorated with the distinctive black painted marks, called postas or siglas poveiras, that each fishing family used to identify their gear and property.
The historic core has a compact character around the church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the main square. The harbour remains active, and the traditional fishing boat designs of the local fleet are part of the city’s visual identity.
For pilgrims on the coastal Camino Português, Póvoa de Varzim is a major service stop before the route continues northward along the coast toward Esposende and Viana do Castelo.
