Descripción
Pontecesures is a small town in the municipality of Pontecesures, in the province of La Coruña, Galicia, situated at the confluence of the Ulla and Sar rivers where they form the final stretch of the navigable waterway from the Ría de Arousa. The town is the landing point for pilgrims making the Camino Espiritual boat crossing from Vilanova de Arousa.
The location is of considerable historical and legendary significance: Pontecesures is associated with the arrival of the boat carrying the body of Saint James, and a Roman bridge here, the Puente Cesures, is documented as one of the ancient crossing points on this waterway. The stone bridge is one of the defining visual features of the landing site.
For pilgrims completing the sea voyage of the Camino Espiritual, disembarking at Pontecesures and seeing the stone bridge ahead is the symbolic completion of the water crossing before the short overland stage to Padrón.
