Description
Piedras Blancas is the administrative capital of the municipality of Castrillón, in Asturias, situated on the coastal terrain between the Avilés estuary and the open Atlantic coast heading westward. The town is named for the white limestone rock formations characteristic of the headland coastline.
The lighthouse at the nearby Punta del Castillo is a neo-Gothic structure with decorative stone detailing unusual for a functional maritime installation, dating to the late nineteenth century. The surrounding coastal terrain has the exposed limestone and heath character of the western Asturian coast, with wide Atlantic views from the headland.
For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Piedras Blancas is a full-service town marking the transition from the Avilés metropolitan area to the more rural western Asturian coast.
