Description
Pereira is a parish in the municipality of Barcelos, in the Braga district. Its name means pear tree, a common Portuguese toponym marking settlements where pear cultivation was once a defining feature of the local landscape or economy.
The village has a traditional agricultural character, with granite-walled smallholdings, mixed cultivation, and the vine pergola training on granite posts typical of this part of the Minho. The parish church serves as the settlement’s focal point.
Pereira lies on the Camino Português on the approach to Barcelos, one of the route’s most celebrated stops, and pilgrims passing through are within a short walk of the town and its medieval bridge.
