Description

Edit

Penas is a small locality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, on the Camino Frances between Melide and Boente. The name means rocks or stone outcrops in Galician, indicating the presence of granite boulders and rocky formations in the surrounding landscape.

The hamlet has a compact stone farmhouse character in the rolling green terrain of the A Coruña interior, where granite outcrops emerge from the pasture on the gentle slopes. The surrounding landscape combines open farmland with scattered oak and eucalyptus woodland.

For pilgrims, Penas is a passage point on the stages between Melide and Ribadiso, the rock toponym a reminder of the granite bedrock that underlies the entire Galician landscape.
