Description

Edit

Oviedo is the capital of the autonomous community of Asturias in northern Spain, situated in the central Asturian valley. The city was the seat of the Kingdom of Asturias from the late eighth century and retains a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble of pre-Romanesque buildings unique in Europe, including the Cámara Santa within the Gothic cathedral complex.

The Cruz de la Victoria, the golden cross that is the emblem of Asturias, is kept in the Cámara Santa alongside the Arca Santa reliquary. The Catedral de San Salvador, begun in the fourteenth century, dominates the compact historic centre with its asymmetric twin towers.

Oviedo is where the Camino Primitivo begins and where the Camino del Norte arrives, and the medieval pilgrim road westward from the city is one of the oldest in Iberia.
