Descripción
Orio is a municipality in Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country, situated at the mouth of the Oria river where it meets the Bay of Biscay. The town has a strong fishing and maritime identity, with a working harbour on the river estuary and a tradition of trainera rowing, the competitive coastal rowing discipline that is deeply embedded in Basque coastal culture.
The town centre is compact and colourful, with the harbour as its focal point and the church of San Nicolás on the main square. The Oria estuary and its sandbar make the river mouth a distinctive landscape feature visible on the approach along the coastal Camino.
Pilgrims on the Camino del Norte pass through or near Orio on the coastal section between San Sebastián and Zarautz.
