Description

Edit

Negreira is a town and municipality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, situated on the Xallas river in the agricultural interior west of Santiago de Compostela. It is the largest settlement on the Camino de Fisterra and Muxía routes between Santiago and the Atlantic coast, providing the main services for pilgrims on what is traditionally the most demanding multi-day walk of these routes.

The town’s historic centre retains the Torre do Allo, a medieval defensive tower associated with the noble house of Moscoso, which dominates the older part of the town. The surrounding municipality is agricultural, with maize, vine, and the mixed smallholder landscape typical of the Galician interior.

For pilgrims, Negreira marks the end of the first day out of Santiago on the Fisterra route and is a well-equipped rest stop with accommodation, restaurants, and a pilgrim hostel.
