Description
Leça do Balio is a parish in the municipality of Matosinhos, in the Porto district. Its principal monument is the Mosteiro de Leça do Balio, a fortified medieval commandery of the Knights Hospitaller. The church and defensive tower date primarily to the fourteenth century and represent one of the best-preserved examples of military-religious architecture in Portugal.
The crenellated granite keep is particularly striking: a tall, plain stone tower with battlements, standing in marked contrast to the residential suburban environment now surrounding it. The church interior retains carved stone tombs and architectural details of considerable quality.
The Camino Português passes directly by this complex, making Leça do Balio one of the most architecturally significant stops on the suburban stretch out of Porto.
