Description
Le Sauvage is a former priory and now a pilgrim gite on the Margeride plateau in the Haute-Loire department, situated at the highest point of the Via Podiensis crossing of the massif, at around 1,200 metres. The priory was founded in the twelfth century as a hospitaller establishment to shelter pilgrims and travellers crossing the exposed plateau.
The complex consists of a stone priory building surrounded by pine forest, with the isolation and altitude giving it a distinctive atmosphere. The name, meaning the wild place, directly describes the character of the high plateau terrain. Le Sauvage has functioned continuously as a waypoint and shelter for pilgrims from its medieval foundation to the present day.
