Description

Edit

La Portela de Valcarce is a small locality in the province of León on the Camino Frances in the upper Valcarce gorge, between Trabadelo and Ambasmestas. The name means the gateway of the Valcarce, indicating a narrow point or threshold in the valley that functions as a geographic gate.

The settlement has a compact character on the valley floor, with the gorge walls rising on each side. The surrounding woodland is predominantly chestnut with oak, the humid Atlantic moisture from Galicia beginning to shape the vegetation even before the border crossing.

For pilgrims, La Portela de Valcarce is a passage point on the final valley stages before the long ascent to O Cebreiro begins in earnest.
