Description
Irun is a city in the province of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country of Spain, situated at the mouth of the Bidasoa river directly on the French border. The city has Roman origins as Oiasso, a port settlement documented in ancient sources, and evidence of Roman activity has been uncovered in the town centre.
The Camino del Norte begins here for pilgrims arriving from France, traditionally starting at the church of Santa María del Juncal, a late Gothic and Renaissance structure in the old town. The river crossing from Hendaye and the first credential stamp at the church mark the formal start of the route.
The modern city has a largely industrial and commercial character, but its historic centre retains the church and some older fabric around the main square.
