Description

Edit

Iglesia de Santa María Magdalena de Fonfría is a Romanesque church in the municipality of A Fonsagrada, in the province of Lugo, Galicia, situated on the high mountain terrain of the Camino Primitivo shortly after the entry into Galicia. The church dates primarily to the twelfth century and is one of the best-preserved Romanesque structures on the Primitivo route, with a carved portal, decorated capitals, and early medieval fabric of considerable quality.

The name Fonfría, meaning cold spring, describes the terrain: a high pass with a natural spring known for its cold, clear water. The combination of the Romanesque church and the cold spring site makes this one of the most evocative waypoints on the early Galician section of the Primitivo, where the physical landscape and the historic built environment reinforce each other.
