Hospital de Valparaíso Ruins

Description

Edit

Hospital de Valparaíso is the ruin of a third medieval pilgrim hospital on the Camino Primitivo mountain stage in the municipality of Allande, in Asturias. The name means Valley of Paradise, a common medieval hospitaller place name found across the Iberian Peninsula at sites of healing or rest. The juxtaposition of the paradisiacal name with the stark mountain terrain reflects the relief that shelter would have provided to exhausted pilgrims on this crossing.

The ruins are located on the high mountain terrain between Pola de Allande and Grandas de Salime, in the most remote section of the route. The cluster of three hospital ruins in this zone documents the systematic medieval approach to supporting pilgrims on a section that claimed significant toll from the unprepared.
