Description

Edit

Gijón is the largest city in Asturias, situated on the Bay of Biscay coast on the central Asturian shoreline. The city has a complex layered identity: an ancient Roman settlement whose baths survive beneath the Cimadevilla old quarter headland, a major nineteenth and twentieth-century industrial port, and a contemporary cultural city with significant architecture and gastronomy.

The Cimadevilla headland, the historic fishing quarter projecting into the bay, retains its medieval street pattern and is crowned by Eduardo Chillida’s monumental sculpture Elogio del Horizonte, a massive concrete frame at the cliff edge that frames the Bay of Biscay. The Roman baths of Campo Valdés, preserved beneath the headland, date to the first century AD.

For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Gijón is the largest urban stage on the Asturian section, accessible from the coastal route or from the inland Pola de Siero variant, offering full services and exceptional cultural infrastructure.
