Description
Galizano is a small locality in the municipality of Ribamontán al Mar, in Cantabria, situated on the clifftop terrain east of the Santander estuary. The village has a traditional Cantabrian character with a Romanesque church retaining early medieval fabric and a compact settlement on the headland above the sea.
The position above the bay gives Galizano wide views across the Bay of Biscay and toward the Santander peninsula on the western horizon. The clifftop terrain carries the typical Cantabrian coastal scrub of gorse and heather, with pasture in the more sheltered areas.
For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Galizano is a waypoint on the coastal approach to the Santander estuary crossing, with the city increasingly visible ahead on the western horizon.
