Description

Edit

Fornos is a small locality in the municipality of Coimbra or the adjacent Mealhada area, in the Coimbra district. The name means kilns or ovens, and in a rural context typically refers to either communal bread ovens (fornos de pão) or lime kilns (fornos de cal) that were once operated at this site. Both types of forno were important rural infrastructure, and settlements named for them often mark sites of former communal industrial activity.

The locality sits in the flat to gently rolling terrain north of Coimbra, in the agricultural corridor approaching the Aveiro district. The surrounding landscape has the cultivated character of the Mondego basin lowlands.

On the Camino Português, Fornos is a rural waypoint in the long flat section between Coimbra and the Aveiro district towns, where the route follows the agricultural corridor northward.
