Description

Edit

Fontoura is a parish in the municipality of Valença, in the Viana do Castelo district. Its name derives from fonte, meaning spring or fountain, with the augmentative suffix suggesting a place of abundant or particularly notable water sources, a common toponym across northern Portugal where granite terrain produces reliable springs.

The settlement is positioned on the upland terrain above the Minho river valley, where natural springs emerge from granite hillsides and feed the small watercourses crossing the agricultural land below. The landscape has the green, damp quality typical of the upper Minho zone.

Fontoura lies on the Camino Português near Valença, one of the final rural parishes before pilgrims reach the fortified border town and the bridge crossing into Spain.
