Description
Ferreiros is a small locality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Frances between Brea and Portomarin. The name means iron workers or blacksmiths, ferreiros in Galician, recording the medieval craft heritage of the settlement where iron was worked in forges powered by local streams.
The hamlet has a compact stone character typical of the Lugo interior, with traditional farmhouses and the parish church of Santa María. The surrounding landscape is the enclosed green valley typical of this section of the Camino Frances between Sarria and Portomarin.
For pilgrims, Ferreiros provides a brief sense of the craft heritage embedded in the Galician place name tradition, the iron-working history connecting the hamlet to the same tradition as Las Herrerías de Valcarce far behind in León.
