Description

Edit

The Faro de Fisterra is the lighthouse at Cape Fisterra, in the municipality of Fisterra, province of A Coruña, Galicia. It occupies the westernmost tip of the Cape Fisterra peninsula, at latitude 42.888 degrees north, and is the westernmost lighthouse on the Iberian Peninsula. The lighthouse was first established in the nineteenth century to warn vessels of the hazardous rocky coast.

The lighthouse is the final destination of the Camino de Fisterra route and the most photographed site at the end of this pilgrimage extension. The zero kilometre marker stone erected near the lighthouse, often draped with pilgrim memorials, is where the traditional end-of-journey rituals take place.

The setting combines the functional architecture of the lighthouse with the raw geological drama of the cape: granite cliffs dropping into the Atlantic, wide oceanic views with no land visible to the west, and the emotional weight of having reached the farthest point.
