Description
Fão is a civil parish in the municipality of Esposende, in the Braga district, situated on the south bank of the Cávado river at its mouth on the Atlantic coast. The village faces Esposende across the river estuary and shares with it a history rooted in fishing and the navigation of the river mouth.
The estuary at this point creates a wide tidal water body framed by sandy banks, and the crossing between Fão and Esposende has historically been made by ferry. The coastal Camino Português crosses the Cávado near here, making the estuarine landscape a defining experience of this stage of the route.
