El Hoyo - Cobaron

El Hoyo – Cobaron is a small locality in the municipality of Muskiz, in the province of Bizkaia, on the clifftop coastal terrain at the western edge of the Basque Country. The locality sits on the exposed headland terrain where Bizkaia meets Cantabria, in an open landscape of coastal heath, grassland, and the dramatic cliff edge above the Bay of Biscay.

The name refers to the local topography: hoyo means a hollow or depression in the terrain, and Cobaron is a local geographic name. The combination suggests the locality occupies a sheltered position within the otherwise exposed clifftop terrain.

For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, this locality marks the final Basque Country stage before the route crosses the administrative boundary into Cantabria.
