Description
El Astillero is a municipality in Cantabria situated on the southern inner shore of the Santander bay, at the mouth of the Bóo river. The name means shipyard, a direct reference to the naval construction industry that gave the town its identity from the eighteenth century onward. Shipbuilding and related maritime industries were long the economic backbone of the settlement.
The town occupies flat tidal terrain at the estuary edge, with the inner bay waters and salt marsh behind. The waterfront retains a working character, and the surrounding landscape is the sheltered inner bay environment rather than the exposed Atlantic coast to the north.
For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte taking the southern bay route, El Astillero is a functional town providing services before the route continues toward Santander or south toward Muriedas.
