Description
Coteporcos is a small locality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the inland Camino route. The name combines cote, meaning a herd or group, with porcos, meaning pigs, directly recording the tradition of herding pigs in the local woodland, particularly on the chestnut and oak mast that sustained free-range pig rearing in the Galician interior.
Free-range pig herding in chestnut woodland, a tradition shared with parts of Portugal and Spain, was a central feature of the rural economy of the Galician interior, where chestnuts and acorns provided seasonal fodder. The cured pork products of Galicia, including lacón and chorizo, derive from this long pig-rearing tradition.
