Description
Castrojeriz is a municipality in the province of Burgos, Castilla y León, situated at the base of a prominent hill crowned by the ruins of a medieval castle on the Camino Frances. The town is one of the most extended linear villages on the route, with its main street following the ancient road alignment for almost a kilometre below the castle hill.
The castle ruins on the hill above offer wide views over the surrounding Meseta, and the silhouette of the ruined towers against the sky is visible from some distance before reaching the village. The town has three medieval churches, of which the Collegiate of Santa María del Manzano is the most significant, containing a fine Gothic portal and a venerated image of the Virgin.
For pilgrims, Castrojeriz provides full services on the Meseta and the memorable visual contrast between the long low town street and the dramatic castle ridge above.
