Castanheira do Ribatejo

Castanheira do Ribatejo is a civil parish in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, in the Lisbon district. Its name means chestnut of the Ribatejo, suggesting that chestnut trees once defined this locality within the broader alluvial plain. The Tagus floodplain here is flat and extensively cultivated, with market gardening and cereal farming characterising the land use.

The village has a modest residential character without prominent historic monuments. Its position on the Camino Português places it in the long flat walking section between Lisbon and Santarém, where the route follows the river corridor through the Ribatejo agricultural lowlands.

The proximity to the Tagus means the surrounding land is subject to seasonal flooding, and the landscape has the open, low-horizon quality typical of the lower Ribatejo plain.
