Description
Casais is a small locality in the municipality of Tomar, in the Santarém district. The name means homestead clusters or dispersed hamlets, a term for the scattered farmstead settlement pattern common in central and northern Portugal, where rural communities developed as loose groupings of farmhouses rather than nucleated villages.
The locality sits in the wooded and agricultural terrain north of Tomar, in the transition zone between the Nabão corridor and the Serra de Aire foothills. The landscape is a mix of pine and eucalyptus forest, small cultivated plots, and the occasional espigueiro-like stone farm structure.
On the Camino Português, Casais is a rural waypoint north of Tomar on the long section approaching the Serra de Aire and the limestone plateau of the Maçarico Pass.
