Descripción
Belorado is a municipality in the province of Burgos, Castilla y León, situated at the foot of the Oca mountain range on the Camino Frances. The town is the first significant service centre in Burgos province, with a large central plaza, multiple churches, and full pilgrim infrastructure.
The church of Santa María has a sixteenth-century tower visible from the surrounding plain. Above the town, cave hermitages are cut into the red sandstone cliff face of the Oca foothills, a feature that gives Belorado a dramatic natural backdrop. The Plaza Mayor has a traditional arcaded character typical of Castilian market towns, and a weekly market continues the commercial tradition.
For pilgrims, Belorado is a major rest stop after the Burgos border stages, providing full services and the visual contrast between the open plain approach and the dramatic cliff face above.
