Description
Barro is a small locality in the municipality of Llanes, in Asturias, situated on the coastal terrain west of the town. The name means clay or mud, a common Iberian toponym indicating terrain with heavy, sticky soil that becomes particularly characteristic after rain. The clay soils of this stretch of the Asturian coast have a reddish tinge from the iron-rich geology of the area.
The locality occupies the clifftop or near-cliff terrain above the Atlantic, in the section of the Camino del Norte where the route passes through a series of small coastal communities. The surrounding landscape has the lush, intensely green quality typical of the humid Asturian Atlantic climate, with the heavy clay soils supporting dense pasture vegetation.
