Descripción
Arnéguy is a commune in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques department, situated at the French-Spanish border on the Nive d’Arnéguy river. The village lies on the lower valley route through Valcarlos, used by pilgrims when the Napoleon Route over the mountain passes is closed due to snow, ice, or severe weather.
The valley route through Arnéguy follows the river closely and is significantly less strenuous than the high route, though it also lacks the dramatic mountain scenery. The border crossing here is informal; the boundary between France and Spain at this point is simply the river.
The village is small and functional, providing a waypoint on the lower route before the ascent toward Valcarlos and the Puerto de Ibañeta above.
