Description

Águeda is a town and municipality in the Aveiro district of central Portugal, situated along the Águeda river where the terrain transitions from the flat Bairrada plain to the foothills of the Caramulo range. It is the most significant urban center on this stretch of the Camino Português between Coimbra and Aveiro.

The town gained international attention for its Agitágueda summer festival, during which thousands of colorful umbrellas are suspended across the main pedestrian street, creating a striking canopy installation that has become one of Portugal’s most photographed events. This umbrella tradition has made Águeda recognizable far beyond its regional setting.

Beyond the installations, Águeda has a modest industrial base and a well-developed town center with riverside promenades, a historic market, and several churches. The river itself plays a central role in the town’s geography and identity, with riparian parkland along its banks. The surrounding hills are largely covered with eucalyptus and maritime pine.
