Descripción
Zuriain is a small municipality in Navarra situated on the flat floodplain of the Arga river, where the valley has widened significantly after the narrow gorge sections near Roncesvalles. The village name derives from Basque, with zuri meaning white, suggesting either the colour of the local stone or a family origin.
The surrounding landscape at Zuriain is notably different from the mountain terrain above: open pasture meadows replace the steep forested slopes, and the Arga river meanders more gently through willows and poplars on the flat plain. The flat terrain makes for easy walking and the first clear view toward the Pamplona plain ahead.
Zuriain has a quiet agricultural character and no significant monuments, but it represents an important landscape transition on the Camino Frances.
