Description

Edit

Sarria is a municipality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, situated on the Sarria river in the Lugo interior. The town holds a special logistical significance for the Camino Frances: it is the last town from which pilgrims can begin walking and still complete the minimum 100 kilometres required by the Santiago Pilgrim Office for the Compostela certificate.

The historic core has the church of El Salvador, a Romanesque-Gothic structure of the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, a medieval castle ruin on the hill above the town, and the monastery of La Magdalena, now operating as a pilgrim hostel. The main street leading to the river has a commercial character catering to the large volume of pilgrims who start here.

Sarria is also where the two route variants from Triacastela, the Samos northern route and the San Xil southern route, converge, making it a significant reunion point as well as a starting threshold.
