Descripción
San Roque is a waypoint on the Camino Frances on the steep climb from Portomarin, in the province of Lugo, Galicia. The site takes its name from a wayside chapel dedicated to Saint Roch, the medieval plague saint and patron of pilgrims, whose dedications appear repeatedly along the Camino routes at significant points.
The climb from Portomarin up to the plateau above the Miño valley is the first significant ascent after the reservoir crossing, and the San Roque chapel marks a traditional pause point on this effort. The surrounding terrain transitions from the wooded hillside of the reservoir valley to the more open plateau country above.
For pilgrims, San Roque is a brief devotional pause on a demanding climb, the Saint Roch dedication providing a direct connection to the medieval pilgrim tradition of placing healing saints at points of difficulty on the route.
