Description
Sahagún is a municipality in the province of León, Castilla y León, situated on the Cea river on the Camino Frances. The town was the most powerful Benedictine monastery in medieval Spain, the Monastery of Saints Facundo and Primitivo, a Cluniac foundation that under Alfonso VI became a centre of European monastic reform and French cultural influence in Iberia.
The architectural legacy is expressed in the distinctive Mudéjar-Romanesque brick tower tradition, of which Sahagún has outstanding examples including the tower of San Tirso and the tower of San Lorenzo, both in Leonese Romanesque-Mudéjar style that blends Christian Romanesque forms with Moorish brickwork techniques. The ruined Arco de San Benito at the monastery entrance is another landmark.
Sahagún is also the convergence point of the Camino Frances and the Via de la Plata variant, making it a significant junction. For pilgrims, it represents the cultural and geographical midpoint between Burgos and León.
