Description

Edit

Reguengo is a small locality in the Santarém district of Portugal. The name derives from reguengo, a term for land held directly by the Portuguese crown in the medieval period, indicating that this locality was once part of a royal estate. Many villages bearing this name across Portugal preserve the memory of this medieval land tenure system.

The settlement is modest and without significant infrastructure, set in the agricultural landscape of the Ribatejo interior between Azambuja and Santarém. The surrounding terrain transitions from the flat Tagus plain to the more undulating limestone and clay landscape characteristic of the Santarém district.

On the Camino Português, Reguengo is a rural waypoint in the long inland section between the Tagus plain and the city of Santarém.
