Description

Edit

Puente Castro is a suburban district of León, situated at the Torío river crossing on the Camino Frances approach from the east. The area has a significant medieval history as the site of an important Jewish community known as Castro Judío, whose settlement was destroyed in 1196. Traces of this Jewish heritage remain in the archaeological record.

The district is now a residential suburb of León with the Torío river providing a natural boundary before the historic city centre. The route crosses the river here on the approach to the walled old town.

For pilgrims, Puente Castro is the last river crossing before the León city centre, the bridge over the Torío marking the final transition from the suburban approach to the historic urban core.
