Description
Pousada is a small locality in the municipality of Coimbra, in the Coimbra district. The name means inn or lodging, referring to a pousada, a stopping place that provided accommodation and food to travellers on the main roads. Before the modern era, pousadas were essential infrastructure on long-distance routes, and places named for them typically mark former stopping points of regular use.
The locality sits on the southern approach to Coimbra, in the outer suburban zone where the rural landscape is transitioning to the urban fringe. Its position on a historic road into the city gives it a practical geographic significance.
On the Camino Português, Pousada falls on the final approach to Coimbra, a major stage of the route and one of the most historically significant cities on the Portuguese Camino.
