Description
Porto de Muge is a small locality in the municipality of Salvaterra de Magos, in the Santarém district, situated at a traditional crossing point on the Tagus river near the Muge tributary confluence. The name porto means port or ferry landing, indicating that this was a recognised river crossing for travellers on the road between the Lisbon area and the Ribatejo interior.
The site has prehistoric significance: the Muge shell middens, among the most important Mesolithic archaeological sites on the Iberian Peninsula, are located in the Muge valley nearby, with evidence of dense human occupation from around 7500 to 5000 BC.
The Camino Português passes through this area on the variant route that follows the Tagus more closely, making Porto de Muge a waypoint of both practical and historical significance for pilgrims.
