Descripción
Palas de Rei is a municipality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, situated on the plateau of the Lugo interior on the Camino Frances. The town is the last significant service centre in the province of Lugo before the route crosses into the province of A Coruña.
The church of San Tirso, with its Romanesque portal and carved capitals of the twelfth century, is the principal historic monument. The name Palas de Rei, meaning palace of the king, records a medieval royal association, with some traditions linking the site to the palace of the Visigothic king Witiza.
For pilgrims, Palas de Rei is a full-service town providing accommodation, cafés, and services at the end of the long plateau stage from Portomarin, and it is the standard overnight stop before the stages approaching Melide and the final corridor to Santiago.
