Description
Muxía is a town and municipality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, situated on the Atlantic coast of the Costa da Morte region. The town is one of the two traditional endpoints of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage extensions from Santiago de Compostela, the other being Fisterra.
The defining landmark is the Santuario da Virxe da Barca, a Baroque pilgrimage church on a dramatic granite headland above the pounding Atlantic surf. According to legend, the Virgin Mary arrived here by stone boat to encourage the apostle James during his mission in Hispania. Several large rocking stones around the sanctuary, the Pedra de Abalar and Pedra dos Cadrís, are venerated in local tradition.
The sanctuary’s exposed position on the headland, the sacred stones, and the oceanic setting give Muxía one of the most spiritually charged pilgrimage environments in Galicia.
