Description
Muros del Nalón is a municipality in Asturias, situated on elevated terrain above the western bank of the Nalón river estuary. The municipality’s historic capital is the village of Muros, which retains the Torre de los Valdés, a fifteenth-century defensive tower of the local noble family, one of the better-preserved medieval tower houses on the Asturian coast.
The estuary setting gives the municipality wide views over the Nalón mouth and the Bay of Biscay to the north. The surrounding landscape combines the enclosed green valley terrain of the Nalón corridor with the more exposed coastal clifftop to the north.
For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Muros del Nalón is a waypoint on the western bank of the Nalón crossing, where the medieval tower provides a point of architectural interest before the route continues westward along the coast toward El Pito.
