Description
Montcuq is a commune in the Lot department, situated on a prominent hilltop on the Via Podiensis route between Cahors and Lauzerte. The village is defined by its medieval keep, a twelfth-century cylindrical tower that crowns the hilltop and is visible from the surrounding plateau long before the village is reached.
The tower is one of the more distinctive landmarks on this section of the Via Podiensis, its round profile against the sky a useful navigational reference for pilgrims on the open plateau. The descent from Montcuq toward Lauzerte gives wide views over the rolling hills and wooded valleys of the Tarn-et-Garonne approach.
