Description

Edit

The Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Obona is a partially ruined Cistercian monastery in the municipality of Tineo, in Asturias, situated in a green valley on the Camino Primitivo route west of Tineo. The foundation is documented from the eighth century and is considered one of the oldest monastic establishments in Asturias, predating the main period of Cistercian expansion in Iberia.

The surviving church retains Romanesque and Gothic elements, including a carved portal and stonework from different periods of construction and modification. The surrounding conventual buildings are largely in ruin, but the scale of the complex gives an impression of its former importance. The valley setting, sheltered and intensely green, is characteristic of the western Asturian interior.

For pilgrims on the Camino Primitivo, Obona is one of the oldest and most atmospheric monastic stops on the entire route, offering a direct connection to the earliest layer of Asturian pilgrimage heritage.
