Descripción
Ligonde is a small locality in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Frances between Ventas de Narón and Palas de Rei. The village is associated with one of the oldest documented pilgrim cemeteries on the Galician Camino Frances, where medieval records indicate that French pilgrims were buried here from the twelfth century onward.
A medieval wayside cross marks the traditional cemetery site, and the historical document recording the burials makes Ligonde one of the most directly evidenced medieval pilgrimage sites on this plateau section. The village itself has a compact stone character in the open plateau terrain.
For pilgrims, Ligonde is a moment of direct contact with the medieval human history of the route, the documented burials providing a reminder of the very different stakes of pilgrimage before modern infrastructure.
