Description

Edit

Lectoure is a commune in the Gers department, situated on a long narrow ridge above the Gers river valley. The city has origins as a Gallic oppidum and later a significant Roman settlement. The museum in the former episcopal palace houses a remarkable collection of Roman taurobolium altars, carved stone slabs used in mystery cult rituals, giving Lectoure an archaeological depth unusual for a small Gascon town. The tall Gothic choir towers above the lower town and the valley below.

For pilgrims on the Via Podiensis, Lectoure is the largest and most historically layered city on the Gers section, offering full services and a high concentration of historical interest.
