Description
Ilarratz is a small locality in the municipality of Esteríbar, Navarra, situated on the Arga river valley between Zubiri and Larrasoaña on the Camino Frances. The Basque toponym, containing ilar suggesting heather, reflects the moorland and scrub heath that cover parts of the surrounding hillsides.
The settlement is modest, set in the valley corridor that the Camino follows downstream along the Arga. The surrounding terrain combines the wooded riverside path, mixed oak hillsides, and the first meadow pastures of the valley floor.
For pilgrims, Ilarratz is a quiet passage point on the second stage, part of the rhythm of small Navarrese hamlets that punctuate the Arga river walk toward Pamplona.
