Descripción
Hospital da Condesa is a locality in the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro, Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino Frances on the high mountain ridge a short distance from O Cebreiro. The name records a medieval pilgrim hospital established by a countess, la condesa, whose foundation provided shelter to pilgrims crossing the exposed mountain pass.
The hospital is documented from the ninth century and is considered one of the oldest pilgrim hospitaller establishments on the Camino Frances. The site marks the continuation of the ancient mountain hospitaller tradition that O Cebreiro itself represents.
The surrounding landscape is the high mountain pasture of the Galician mountains, with the wide views and the enclosing hills that characterise the ridge terrain between O Cebreiro and Triacastela.
