Description
Hornillos del Camino is a municipality in the province of Burgos, Castilla y León, situated in a shallow valley below the Meseta plain on the Camino Frances. The village is reached after a long ridge walk from Rabé de las Calzadas with no other settlement visible, and its sudden appearance in the hollow is one of the characteristic surprises of the early Meseta.
The village has a compact stone character with the church of San Román, a simple Romanesque-influenced structure, and traditional Castilian farmhouses grouped tightly around the main street. A fountain provides water at the village entrance.
For pilgrims, Hornillos del Camino is typically the end of the first full Meseta stage from Burgos, and its isolation in the plain gives it a distinct character as a refuge in open country.
