Description

Edit

Figueras is a small locality in the municipality of Castropol, in Asturias, situated on the southern bank of the Eo river estuary at the Asturias-Galicia border. The village is the last Asturian settlement encountered by pilgrims on the Camino del Norte before crossing the estuary bridge to Ribadeo in Galicia.

The Eo estuary at this point is wide and luminous, a broad tidal inlet that has historically formed the natural border between the two regions. The ruins of the Castillo de San Damián occupy a headland above the estuary mouth, a remnant of the medieval defensive system that once guarded this strategic crossing. The views across the estuary toward Ribadeo and its church are among the more dramatic of the final Asturian stages.
